There was a time when a rodeo meant you kept riding âtil you got bucked off or the horse quit kicking. Back before the contemporary rodeo circuit became what it is today, with 8-second clocks, corporate sponsors and televisions deals, it was the domain of cow hands, wranglers and the weathered men from across the west who were âgood with a horseâ. Chauncey Miller, born in 1901, was a standout among the hardened bunch who ârodeoedâ the big sky country of Montana. In the early part of the twentieth century he tangled with many wild broncs including a cantankerous roan with a â44â branded on its hip that may have been the enigmatic inspiration for the classic cowboy song âStrawberry Roan,â by Curley Fletcher. The Millerâs are personal friends of ours and they have lived in the upper Yellowstone River basin for many years and the original of this sculpture was done as a gift for the family.
