  • There was a time when a rodeo meant you kept riding ’til you got bucked off or the horse quit kicking. Back before the contemporary rodeo circuit became what it is today, with 8-second clocks, corporate sponsors and televisions deals, it was the domain of cow hands, wranglers and the weathered men from across the west who were “good with a horse”. Chauncey Miller, born in 1901, was a standout among the hardened bunch who ‘rodeoed’ the big sky country of Montana. In the early part of the twentieth century he tangled with many wild broncs including a cantankerous roan with a “44” branded on its hip that may have been the enigmatic inspiration for the classic cowboy song “Strawberry Roan,” by Curley Fletcher. The Miller’s are personal friends of ours and they have lived in the upper Yellowstone River basin for many years and the original of this sculpture was done as a gift for the family.
