  • After a back road research trip in Utah and Colorado, between Pleasant View and Edwards, Co. via Grand Junction
in August of 2023, I waited on purpose to have a dream vision. My mind keeps vivid impressions of important sites or places of spiritual significance. The images were clear in my mind of the areas I drove in Southern Utah and near the Grand Junction area.
A treaty had been signed in 1868 by Chief Ouray Capota Ute in the San Luis Valley. Shortly after, State officials opened new settlements and home site land to pioneers looking for gold in the region. Knowing the history of my grandfather's Ute People was very helpful in identifying landmarks of events that my people walked traveling through the desert and mountain trails. A blurred image first appeared as an idea for this painting. The Ute individuals or families would walk 25 to 30 miles a day carrying their belongings. From the elevation of the high rocky mountain region to the high and low Plateaus. Many Utes were killed by settlers crossing what was Ute land a season before. Many suffered and starved along the journey from San Luis Valley to the new Fort Duchesne Agency, in central Utah. Four to six weeks of harsh traveling on foot. A shield of a warrior or an individual belonging was placed where a tribal band member lost their life and returned to the world of spirits. The relatives who were lost or killed along the long journey were remembered at camping spots along the way. Many sitting by the campfire remembering the good deeds of this person.
