  • A free ranger was a cattleman who ran his cows on the open "free range". When my grandad was a boy, his father free ranged cattle. My grandad's job was to drift with the cattle, keeping an eye on them, sleeping at night under the prairie heavens. This form of livestock grazing came to an end with the fencing off of the great prairies, even the Federal lands. There is still a form of free grazing I have witnessed in Ireland, where individuals may freely graze their livestock along the verges and bar pits of Irish roads. The Irish refer to this as "grazing the hungry grass" as it is a means of last resort for many poorer farmers.
