  • K.R. Wood: cowboy historian, actor, singer/songwriter

I met K. R. one evening in the Redbud Cafe in Blanco. I went to his table, introduced myself, gave him a business card, and said I would love to paint him. He called me a few days later and said, "Well, little lady, I'd be happy to sit for you to paint my portrait". He spent a day at our house while I painted a study of him. That was the start of a very dear friendship.

Some of his accomplishments: Appeared in The Last Picture Show (he was 15 ), Texasville, Hotwired, and Urban Cowboy, On the Road with Willie Nelson as well as several TV shows. His "Fathers of Texas" album was recognized by the Texas Senate Resolution 73, signed by Governor George W. Bush, and was an approved Texas History curriculum. His album "The Crockett Chronicles" was the only musical recording ever allowed to be recorded inside the Alamo, in a reverent midnight recording session. K.R. played Davy Crockett's actual fiddle on loan from the Crockett family. He was named an Honorary Member of the Davy Crockett family in Tennessee. He received the "President's Award" by the International Western Music Association for his album "The Songs and Tales of the Old Chisholm Trail" and "The Western Heritage Wrangler Award" and "Outstanding Original Composition" from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

    K. R. as "Camp Cookie" brought history to life in schools and community events all across Texas through his traveling Chuck Wagon. He was a character larger than life with a heart as big as Texas.
